I met with Eric Steuer, Creative Director for Creative Commons while at SXSW Interactive. Eric helped me learn more about licenses that would help record labels we work with to distribute some songs freely while still protecting their rights. Traditional copyright makes all rights reserved and makes it difficult for partners, promoters, friends, etc. to help out with things like viral marketing. For example, an artist applying a creative commons license might say: “Copy this freely and give it to all your friends, but if you want to make commercial use of the music, e.g. in a film or commercial, then we have to talk.” Many bands make most of their money from touring and some have elected to distribute their music as a marketing tool to help sell more concert tickets. In addition, putting a Creative Commons license on a particular song that gets given away with a sale from a retail partner or a non-profit raising money for a good cause, can lead to more fans learning about a band and wanting to buy the whole album. MediaRica is using lots of new business models to monetize new media.
